SUMMERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A man was rescued from a Monroe County pond in the middle of the night after he drove his Jeep from a field into the water, officials said.

Monroe County deputies were called at 12:04 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2024, to the area of Lulu Road and South County Line Highway in Summerfield Township.

The caller told police that someone was yelling for help and saying they couldn’t swim from the back of their property, near a pond.

When deputies arrived, they saw a man about 20 feet off the shore in the water, struggling to stay afloat. A deputy went into the water and rescued the man with the homeowner’s floatation device.

The man was taken to ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital.

Police saw fresh tire tracks coming from a field to the north that disappeared into the pond. The rescued man gave “conflicting information” when asked whether anyone else was in the car, officials said.

A dive team went into the pond and recovered a Jeep Wrangler. Nobody else was inside, officials said.

The crash remains under investigation.
