DEARBORN, Mich. – Dearborn police officers said they had to duck for cover when someone launched a lit firework at their patrol car.
The incident occurred on Thursday (July 4) during Independence Day celebrations.
On Friday, officials said they were looking for the person or group that targeted the officers.
Police are actively investigating that case as they brace for another busy night.
During the July 4 celebrations, there was an unbelievable dash cam video from Dearborn police.
“In the video, you can clearly see the firework land under the patrol car,” said Dearborn police Corporal Dan Bartok. “It explodes, then there’s a large flash so powerful that it jars and moves the scout car.”
Thankfully, the officers were not injured as they were targeted near Fordson High School in East Dearborn.
“The officers were extremely busy responding to numerous complaints, and while they were there, this incident happened,” Bartok said.
Local 4 showed the video of what police were up against on July 4 to Dearborn residents, who said the incident was sad as the police were protecting people.
“We’re supposed to be doing this for Independence Day, not to do this kind of stuff but just to have fun,” said a resident.
Dearborn police responded to more than 200 calls for service on Independence Day alone.
Police are bracing for another busy night, and extra officers will be on patrol with fireworks, which are legally permitted until 11:45 p.m.
“We won’t tolerate any acts of violence against our police officers, and we will exhaust all resources to find the people who threw them at our officers,” Bartok said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Dearborn police. Dearborn police also remind people that minors cannot use fireworks, and parents or guardians will be ticketed if caught.
