Farmington Hills police honored for mental health crisis response

First in Michigan to complete 100% BHEP training

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards honored Chief Jeff King and the Farmington Hills Police Department, as well as Director Bob Houhanisin and the Farmington Hills Department of Public Safety, for their effective response to mental health crises.

Both departments achieved 100% completion of the Commission’s 20-hour Behavioral Health Emergency Partnership (BHEP) training for their sworn officers, dispatchers, and key personnel, becoming the first in Michigan to do so.

BHEP training was developed with the DHHS Mental Health Diversion Council to enhance first responders’ ability to handle behavioral health crises.

Kimberly Koster, the Commission Chair, expressed deep respect and admiration for the Farmington Hills Police Department and the Farmington Public Safety Department. They emphasized the importance of recognizing Chief King and Director Houhanisin for their leadership, commitment to law enforcement, and service to the community and the State of Michigan.

Tim Bourgeois, Executive Director of the Commission, praised the collaborative efforts of outstanding departments completing the BHEP training. He expressed gratitude for the agencies’ dedication to mental health and hopes their recognition inspires other first responder agencies.
