Allegedly, on Sunday, July 2, 2023, a traffic crash occurred involving an Amazon driver and a 15-year-old driver.

The Amazon driver is alleged to have failed to yield to the juvenile driving a GMC Acadia, resulting in the Amazon driver having life-threatening injuries.

Officials say the teen left the crash scene, but a neighbor heard the crash and helped the Amazon driver.

Amanda Szymanski, 45, of Dryden, who is the mother of the teen and an off-duty Almont police Officer, arrived at the scene of the crash. Szymanski allegedly told investigators that she was in the car with her son at the time of the crash.

Szymanski was charged with false information to a police officer, a two-year high court misdemeanor.

Officials say the now 16-year-old was charged with failure to stop at the scene of the accident, resulting in serious impairment or death, a five-year felony.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office will handle the 71A Lapeer District Court case.

Szymanski was charged in 71A Lapeer District Court, where a $5,000 personal bond was set.

A Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for Friday, July 19, 2024, at 9 am.
