Washtenaw County residents receive notice to resume normal tap water use after break-in at facility

Sylvan Township says it will now work with state officials to increase security at plant

SYLVAN TOWNSHIP, Mich.Washtenaw County residents receive ‘All clear’ notice to resume normal tap water use after break-in at a water treatment facility.

Residents in Sylvan Township have received the “All clear” to stop using bottled water and resume normal tap water use.

The Michigan Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy said water samples collected on Monday (July 8) met state water quality standards.

Now that normal water consumption can resume, residents are encouraged to flush their home plumbing systems and appliances.

The testing came after someone broke into the water treatment plant and tampered with the system controls.

Other corrective actions the Sylvan Township took included purging the water storage tanks, replacing treatment chemicals, inspecting plant components, testing plant operations, repairing damaged components, flushing water mains, and securing the plant site.

The township says it will now work with state officials to increase the security at the plant.
