DETROIT – Another vigil dedicated to the victims of the block party mass shooting on Detroit’s east side is taking place Thursday evening.
Detroit City Councilman Scott Benson and Mohican Regent Residents Association members are organizing the vigil.
“This is a time to grieve, and this was a tragic incident,” said Benson. “We’re purposely having the vigil in the area or happened in the neighborhood, where it happened, so those residents who endured the gunshots and the screams for help will be able to get these types of support services.”
Dignitaries from several churches are also on-site to help from a religious standpoint.
“When things actually like happen in our neighborhoods, we have to be prepared as a government as a community to come together or wrap our arms around the residents,” Benson said.
With mental health being a big topic for the people traumatized by the mass shooting, mobile crisis units from Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network will be on-site for emotional support.
“We’re going have to get to a point where we can talk about this, and we can move on and talk about as a community, how we’re going to get to the next level where this does not come to define what happens in our neighborhoods,” Benson said. “People will be safe, the being in our neighborhoods and our parks.”
