Bailiff shoots, kills tenant during eviction on Detroit’s west side

The shooting is under investigation

DETROIT – An eviction on Detroit’s west side is under investigation after it turned into a deadly shooting.

Police say a bailiff went to a home Friday (July 12) on Manderson Road near Palmer Park where officials say the tenant wouldn’t answer the door, causing the bailiff to force his way inside.

Local 4 is told that the tenant was sitting on a bed, holding a weapon.

The Detroit Police Department and the mental health unit were called when an officer engaged his taser, but the tenant lunged toward the bailiff, who shot and killed the man.

“Officers negotiated with him for approximately 10 minutes,” said Capt. Philip Rodriguez. “.As the supervisor and the mental health units were en route, the individual became more aggressive with the officers, and we had to deploy our tasers to try to control the situation.”

Neither the Detroit police officer or bailiff were injured in the incident. The two are cooperating with the investigation.

This is a breaking news story, and updates will be posted as they become available.
