SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Desjuan Tyree-Anthony Mack was sentenced to a minimum of 22 years and six months to 40 years for killing his grandmother inside an apartment complex in Southfield.
The murder occurred on March 24, 2022, at 11:23 p.m. inside the Legacy Place apartments in the 22500 block of Saratoga Street.
Officials say the then 23-year-old killed his grandmother, Margaret Alice Mack, with a gun that he stole years prior in Farmington Hills.
Desjuan then called the police and told them that he had fallen asleep and woken up to find his then 72-year-old grandmother unresponsive and cold to the touch.
Officials say Desjuan informed authorities that he had last seen her alive almost an hour earlier before he had made the emergency call.
Southfield police said they arrived and found Margaret shot several times, pronouncing her dead at the scene.
Officials said Desjuan lived with his grandmother before returning from out of state. He was later identified in her murder.
Investigators said they found a .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol hidden under a couch pillow and determined to be stolen out of Farmington Hills in 2018.
Southfield police Chief Elvin Barren said shell casings confirmed the pistol as the weapon used in the murder.
