Assaulted woman escapes axe-wielding man in Northern Michigan

Victim expected to be OK

AETNA TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 52-year-old man from Northern Michigan was arrested Friday, July 12, after allegedly beating a woman and threatening to kill her with an axe.

According to authorities, Michigan State Police troopers were called to a home in Aetna Township, about halfway between Cadillac and Houghton Lake, on reports of an assault with an axe. The victim fled the scene and met troopers at a church. Police said she told them she had an argument with the suspect, who hit her several times before he grabbed an axe and threatened to kill her.

The victim had visible injuries but refused treatment.

Police said they found the suspect sitting in a chair at the home where the incident happened, axe still in hand. He reportedly came to the door still holding the axe and was taken into custody after troopers were eventually able to convince him to put the axe down.
