What we know after 7-year-old boy shot in chest at Inkster apartment

INKSTER, Mich. – A 7-year-old boy was shot in the chest Monday at an apartment in Inkster, police said.

What happened

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2024, at the Dearborn View Apartments near Beech Daly and Cherry Hill roads in Inkster.

Investigators believe the shooting was the result of a weapon being recklessly fired inside the apartment. Officials are still trying to determine what exactly led up to that moment.

“This is a deeply concerning incident, especially when it involves a young child,” police Chief Tamika Jenkins said.

No further details about the nature of the shooting have been revealed.

Young boy injured

When Inkster police arrived at the apartment, they found a 7-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his chest.

Officials rushed him to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

He is listed in critical condition, but he is stable.

Person of interest

Police said they have identified a person of interest. That person might have been inside the apartment when the shot was fired.

Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to call Inkster police at 313-563-9850. Callers can remain anonymous, and there might be a reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
