OWOSSO, Mich. – Some extremely concerning messages were found in the home of a Michigan man who’s accused of shooting cars from his bedroom window, officials said.
Mack Adam Davis, 21, of Owosso, was arrested in late June, and a criminal complaint was unsealed that accuses him of possessing a short-barreled rifle.
2 cars struck by gunfire
Officers from the Owosso Police Department were called the morning of June 17, 2024, to an intersection near Davis’ house, they said.
Cars parked at two different addresses had been struck by gunshots.
One of the car owners told police that their cars had recently been spray painted with anti-gay and homophobic messages.
Gun found in home
Police spoke to several neighbors in the area, including Davis. They determined that the trajectory of the bullets showed that they had been fired from an upstairs window in his home.
Davis confirmed that the window led to his bedroom. He also said he was the only person in the house on June 16 and June 17, according to the criminal complaint.
Owosso police searched Davis’ home and found a .22-caliber rifle in his sister’s bedroom closet.
The barrel of the gun had been altered so that it was 7.5 inches, making the rifle 18.5 inches long, in total.
A rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches in length or shorter than 26 inches in total length is defined as a short-barreled rifle and must be properly registered, officials said.
Davis admitted that he had shortened the barrel of the rifle, saying it was “illegally modified,” police said.
He later admitted that he had shot the rifle at cars and defaced cars with anti-gay and homophobic messages, according to authorities.
More discoveries at home
Owosso police said they found 58 spent shell casings near the window of Davis’ bedroom. The casings came from a .22-caliber weapon.
The two window screens in his room had holes from small-caliber bullets, officials said.
“Davis also had items in his house indicating a support for nazi ideology, including a notebook with a page where Davis drew a swastika and wrote, ‘Kill um!! F---,’ an Israeli flag with the words ‘anti-Jew f----- killer,’ and ‘death to you all,’” the criminal complaint reads.
Police said they found a knife with “f----- killer” written on the blade.
Davis wrote approvingly of mass shooters and frequently described plans to carry out mass shootings at hospitals, synagogues, schools, mosques, and supermarkets, officials said.
But he “denied any plans to commit a mass shooting or that he targeted the individuals’ cars because of their sexual orientation,” the complaint reads.
Conclusion
Officials argued Davis’ admission that he “illegally modified” the rifle suggests he didn’t register it properly with the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
The criminal complaint concludes there’s probable cause that Davis illegally manufactured, possessed, and used a short-barreled rifle.
