ROMULUS, Mich. – Detroit Metro Airport is completely stripping down and rebuilding 67 bathrooms in the McNamara Terminal.
DTW officials said the upgrades include terrazzo tile flooring, lights that indicate whether stalls are occupied, sink step stools, oversized sinks, individual lighted mirrors, convenience shelving in stalls and urinals, and light-up entry signage.
The first set of newly renovated bathrooms opened in late June, near Gate A10.
“Our facilities at DTW are getting even better,” Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Chad Newton said. “This project, thanks to the Biden administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law grants, will improve our customer experience as we strive to exceed the high standards that our guests have come to expect at DTW.”
The $28 million grant covers most of the $38 million in construction costs. The rest of the project is funded by the Wayne County Airport Authority.
Every passenger-facing bathroom is being upgraded. They will be shut down on a rolling basis to minimize the impact on travelers.
Signs will be placed on construction walls to direct travelers to the nearest open bathroom.
All bathroom renovations are expected to be completed sometime in 2027.
The Wayne County Airport Authority has also applied for a $61.8 million grant for Access Road work on Dingell Drive. That grant is expected to be finalized soon, airport officials said.
