DETROIT – Spotlight Park in Northwest Detroit will host free music on Fridays until July 27.
The Music in the Park series allows neighborhood kids to hear and learn from world-class musicians.
“A lot of people in the community might never go to Orchestra Hall,” said Daniel A. Washington, founder of NW Goldberg Cares, who had the idea to bring the music and the people who make it to them.
The organization has partnered with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for three years.
Briana Black, her 4-year-old, Thomas, and his 2-year-old sister have been coming from the start.
“They rotate to different stations, and they’re always engaged, even when my baby was an infant, she had something to do,” said Black.
Participants 10 and under also left home with their own box of small instruments.
“My children would not have got to have this experience otherwise,” Black said.
Each time musicians take the stage to play at Spotlight Park, Karisa Antonio sees a bit of magic.
As the Senior Director of Social Innovation and Learning with DSO, she sees the immeasurable value events like these have.
“We know the power of these introductory experiences,” said Antonio. “For people to say, here’s an artist that looks like me; it’s this freedom of inspiration and expression.”
