WYANDOTTE, Mich. – A minor traffic stop in Wayne County led to the discovery of a homemade bomb filled with shrapnel, police said.

A Wyandotte patrol car pulled over a GMC panel van around 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in the area of Vinewood and 9th streets.

Officials said the traffic stop was because of a minor violation, but they noticed “inconsistencies” while speaking to the two men in the van.

They investigated further and found a homemade bomb containing shrapnel inside the van, according to authorities.

Officials also found a small amount of cocaine, they said.

Two Michigan men in their 30s were taken into custody on suspicion of possession of an explosive device, possession of dangerous drugs, and possession of cocaine.

“This type of explosive device is designed to do one thing: kill or injure people,” police said in a release. “Shrapnel is designed to increase the lethality of the device. Therefore, it can be safely assumed that their intent was malicious.

“This device will never hurt anyone due to the outstanding police work by Officer Tyler Groat, Officer Rasmussen, and Officer Saltsman.”

The investigation continues.
