$37,500 offered in search for man accused of killing Melvindale police officer

Anyone who sees Michael Lopez is urged to call 911. He is considered armed and dangerous

MELVINDALE, Mich. – Federal authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating a man involved in the death of a Downriver police officer.

Melvindale police officer Mohamed Said was shot and killed in the line of duty at about 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 21. Investigators have identified Michael Lopez as the suspect.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer responded to Said’s death on social media, writing “The Melvindale community has lost a treasured member of the community with the death of Officer Mohamed Said. My heart is with his family, friends, and loved ones today. I hope we can always honor his bravery, dedication, and sacrifice.”

Said reportedly grew up and went to school in Melvindale before becoming a police officer. Authorities said they have multiple units searching for Lopez.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Melvindale Police Department, Michigan State Police and others are offering a reward of up to $37,500 for information regarding Lopez’s whereabouts.

Lopez, 44, is described as standing 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighing about 250 pounds. He has multiple tattoos and a goatee and was last seen wearing black pants and no shirt.
