DETROIT – The Detroit People Mover is closing in September so workers can replace sections of track.
The closure will begin after Labor Day, on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024, and will last around 11 weeks. The People Mover is expected to be back open before Thanksgiving.
The track improvement project is being done proactively. It involves 7,000 feet of rail on nine curves and adjacent connecting straight track.
The goal is to extend the life of the rail system and make the ride smoother and quieter. The replacement track is expected to last at least 15 to 30 years.
According to the People Mover website, this is only the third rail replacement project in the history of the Detroit People Mover. Different curves and adjacent track were replaced during similar projects in 2008 and 2016.
At least one more of these types of projects is expected to take place five years or more in the future to replace any original curve sections.
Where will work be done?
The work will be completed in several general areas of the People Mover system’s track.
- Beaubien at Lafayette (Bricktown, Greektown)
- Beaubien and Macomb Str from Monroe around to Randolph (Bricktown, Greektown, and Cadillac Center)
- Park from Woodward to Washington (Grand Circus Park)
- Bagley near Clifford (Times Square)
- Cass near Lafayette (Michigan)
- Atwater and Hart Plaza from Riverwalk to across M-10/Lodge & Jefferson (Financial District)
- Jefferson and Beaubien from Randolph around to Larned (Millender, Renaissance Center)
