Grosse Pointe teen hailed as hero after rescuing woman who drove her car into lake

Heroic incident happened on Tuesday

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – A teenager from Grosse Pointe is being hailed as a hero after helping rescue a woman from a car that was submerged in Lake St. Clair.

It happened late Tuesday (July 23) morning at Lake Front Park in St. Clair Shores near 9 Mile Road.

“I was just fishing, nothing crazy, and then a car goes in the water,” John Agnello, 15, said.

Agnello and another bystander jumped into action and swam out to the car to help the driver escape.

When Agnello and the other good Samaritan got to the car, they realized the door was stuck and went for the window.

“After, we convinced (the driver) to get out of the window of the car and brought her to shore,” Agnello said.

The driver said there were others in the car, but when Agnello went back to check, he said no one else was in the vehicle.

The driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to be ok.

Agnello has a few scrapes and bruises but was cleared by paramedics on the scene.

The community is now hailing him as a hero.

“Everyone’s been saying that, I really appreciate that,” Agnello said.

St. Clair Shores police said the crash is under investigation.
