Former University of Michigan cornerback remembered at hometown memorial

Andre Seldon Jr., was a star player at Belleville High School

A memorial was held for former University of Michigan football player and Belleville High School star Andre Seldon Jr., who died in a drowning accident.

Seldon Jr. died at age 22 during an apparent cliff-diving accident in Utah.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to the Porcupine Dam at 2:20 p.m. Saturday (July 20). A caller told them that a young man, later identified as Seldon, had dove from the cliffs into the water and didn’t resurface.

Search and rescue teams and divers went to the scene and searched for Seldon. His body was found in the water at 9:05 p.m. Saturday, police said.

“We just don’t want to believe it, especially to a kid like that, it’s unreal,” Seldon’s former coach Christopher Moore said.

Moore shared memories of Seldon during the memorial and balloon release.

Many former teammates were in attendance.

“Dre was one of those guys who always helped me, any question I had he was always there,” former Belleville High School teammate Jeremiah Warren said.

Seldon’s mom, Danielle Smith, said paying tribute to her son in the city where it all started was important.

“This is like home for him,” Smith said, referring to the football field where the memorial was held.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 2, 2024.
