ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A wrong-way driver caused a crash on I-75 in Royal Oak that killed themself and three other people.

At 2:50 a.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2024, a wrong-way driver in a black Volkswagen driving north in the southbound lanes of I-75 crashed into a Dodge Caravan near 11 Mile Road in Royal Oak, according to police.

When Royal Oak police officers arrived to the scene the Volkswagen was on fire and there were numerous victims. Police said officers ramped vehicles off the freeway to secure the scene.

Police said the wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. There were four people inside the Caravan and three of them were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. One of the people in the Caravan was transported to a hospital and listed in critical condition.

The freeway was closed for six hours for the investigation and clean up of the scene. Michigan State Police troopers are still working to process evidence, identify victims, and notify their family.
