Man, son thrown from food truck when pickup truck crashes into them in Detroit

Man spent 8 days hospitalized, underwent 3 surgeries

DETROIT – A father and his son were thrown from their food truck when it was struck by a pickup truck.

The crash happened on July 7 in Detroit. Raphael Williams, the owner of the food truck, called Unity Catering RBG, was working inside it with his teenage son.

Security video captured Williams and his son being thrown from the food truck after the pickup truck crashed into them. His son walked away with a scraped knee, but Williams’ injuries were more serious.

“I must have hit my head on the top part or something here because I got stitches in my head and something gashed my leg really bad as I was being ejected out of the back of the food truck,” he said.

Williams spent eight days in the hospital and had three surgeries.

Just recently, Williams began walking without crutches.

He says serving soul food curbside in his food truck was a dream and he’s eager to get back to it.

“I love cooking for people, it’s a passion for me,” he said.

Due to missed insurance payments, the truck repairs are not covered.

“It’s costing me out of my pocket,” he said. “I got to get the plumbing done, the electrical work done and the propane.”

Williams has launched a Gofundme to help raise funds to get back to doing what he loves.
