Million-dollar renovation set for Detroit’s Chinatown neighborhood

DETROIT – There’s a new push to revitalize a historic part of Midtown Detroit.

The area surrounding Cass and Peterboro -- what’s known as Detroit’s Chinatown neighborhood -- will look remarkably different in about a year.

Decades ago, Chinatown in Detroit was a huge deal. After years of eyesores and blight, a new renovation to Peterboro Street is in the works.

State Sen. Stephanie Chang, Sara Anthony and Mary Cavanaugh came together to celebrate the incoming million-dollar renovation.

“It’s been really incredible over the past year and before then as well to be able to hear the stories of folks who grew up in Detroit’s China town, that have all these amazing memories,” Chang said. “I really want to see the future of this street incorporate some of those elements - as well as serve the needs of the community that’s right here.”

The project aims to restore the neighborhood’s cultural heritage through extensive streetscape improvements and more.

“I’m really excited. I think this has the opportunity to be meaningful for Detroit, for the Asian-American community as well as be an example of our preservation too,” Chang said.
