Police reveal info about 4 killed, 1 hurt in wrong-way Oakland County crash

Wrong-way driver caused crash on I-75, police say

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Police have revealed much more information about the four people who were killed and the other who was injured in a wrong-way Oakland County crash.

The crash happened around 2:50 a.m. Sunday, July 28, 2024, in the southbound lanes of I-75 near 11 Mile Road in Royal Oak.

Officials said a 29-year-old Oak Park man was driving a black Volkswagen north in the southbound lanes when he crashed into a Dodge Caravan.

Royal Oak officers arrived to find the Volkswagen on fire. They shut down the freeway and ramped off both cars to begin their investigation.

The driver of the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were four people inside the Caravan. A 34-year-old Troy man, a 54-year-old man from Mexico and a 71-year-old man from Mexico were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 31-year-old Troy woman was taken to a nearby hospital. She is expected to survive.

Police closed the freeway for six hours.

Officials are waiting on the toxicology results after an initial medical examination.

Michigan State Police continue to investigate the crash, including where and when the at-fault driver entered the southbound lanes.
