MONROE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A fire in Monroe Township injured 17 firefighters and closed down a stretch of Monroe Street.
It happened Tuesday, July 30, at about 1:30 p.m. Authorities said they received several 911 calls reporting smoke coming from a vacant building next to the Michigan College of Beauty. Responding crews found heavy black smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters from 10 different communities assisted in battling the fire.
Authorities said 17 firefighters were treated at the scene for heat-related injuries and one was taken to a hospital. They are expected to survive.
South Monroe Street has been closed between Jones Avenue and Dunbar Road. The investigation is ongoing.
