FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – A 28-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a Farmington Hills shooting he claims was in self-defense.
The incident happened Saturday, July 27, at about 2:30 a.m. According to authorities, officers received a 911 call regarding a man attempting to kick in the door of his ex-girlfriend’s apartment, located near 12 Mile and Middlebelt roads. On the way to the apartment complex, police received another 911 call that reported the ex-boyfriend had shot the woman’s current boyfriend and drove off.

Police said they located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The suspect, Sean McCombs, reportedly had a loaded handgun on him and admitted he shot the other man, but said it was in self-defense.
According to authorities, McCombs was upset his ex-girlfriend was seeing another man and came to the apartment in the middle of the night to retrieve the children he has with her. When she opened the door, he reportedly started fighting the new boyfriend before firing four shots at the man, striking him twice.
The victim, a 29-year-old man from Farmington Hills, was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.
McCombs was charged Tuesday, July 30, with assault with intent to murder, felony firearm, malicious destruction of property and driving with a suspended license.
Bond was set at $250,000 cash or surety-10%. McCombs is expected to return to court for a preliminary exam on Aug. 7.
