Warren babysitter charged after 2-year-old in her care shoots himself

Toddler expected to be OK

WARREN, Mich. – A woman has been charged with multiple felonies after a toddler in Warren shot himself with an unsecured gun.

The shooting happened at a home on Edgemont Avenue, near Hoover Road, Saturday, Aug. 3, at about 6 p.m. The 2-year-old was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

Police said the child was in the care of a babysitter who is a licensed CPL holder. She reportedly had two handguns unsecured and easily accessible to the child. Authorities said the toddler got his hands on one of the guns and shot himself in the stomach.

April Green was charged Monday, Aug. 5, with firearm safe storage violation, second-degree child abuse and two counts of felony firearm. She was given a $75,000 bond. If released, Green is required to have no access to firearms or contact with children under 17.
