Criminal cyber attack behind McLaren Health Network IT collapse

Downtime procedures instituted post cyber attack

The disruption to their information technology and phone systems reported on Tuesday resulted from a criminal cyber attack, according to McLaren Northern Michigan’s Facebook page.

The report was released on Wednesday (Aug. 7), where the hospital said its technology team continues to work with external cyber security experts to analyze the attack’s nature and mitigate the threat actors’ impacts.

Officials for the healthcare corporation said they instituted downtime procedures to ensure care delivery within their facilities.

Policies and procedures are now in place, and they are training for information technology disruptions.

Officials for the healthcare corporation said their facilities are largely operational and able to care for their communities and will continue to do so until operations are fully restored.

As a precaution, some non-emergency appointments, tests, and treatments are being rescheduled.

They also work with vendors and insurance providers to ensure their supply chain is not impacted and insurance authorizations are processed for care and treatments.

Patients with scheduled appointments should plan to attend those appointments unless a member of the McLaren Health Care team contacts them.

Their corporation will work with any patient who has an appointment rescheduled.

During this disruption, the healthcare corporation is requesting patients bring any of the following information they may have to their appointments:

  1. A list of current medications or prescription bottles
  2. Printed physician orders for imaging studies or treatments
  3. Printed results of recent lab tests available in the patient portals
  4. A list of allergies
