HARTLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Michigan man said he wasn’t going to play the lottery one day, but he passed by the store and decided to buy a ticket. He won $390,000.

“I wasn’t going to play Lucky for Life that day, but I was driving by the store on my way home and decided at the last minute to stop and buy a ticket,” Matthew Russell said.

Russell, 57, of Fenton, bought his ticket at Hartland AC Holdings on Highland Road in Hartland Township.

He matched the five white balls drawn on June 30: 06-09-12-24-32.

“The next day, I called the Michigan Lottery’s winning number hotline, and when all my numbers were read off, I shouted, ‘Heck yeah,’” Russell said. “I instantly felt numb, and I still do weeks later.”

Russell visited Michigan Lottery headquarters to claim his prize. He chose a lump sum of $390,000 over annual payments of $25,000.

He said he plans to save the money as a financial cushion for retirement.
