CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A man is in custody after police in Canton Township say he shot and killed a 35-year-old man.
Canton Township police said the shooting happened at around 11:48 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, at a residential neighborhood in the 200 block of Cornell Street.
Police said witnesses reported shots had been fired after a brief confrontation between the suspect toward the victim. Both men are residents in the neighborhood.
When officers arrived, they found the 35-year-old man in the street with a gunshot wound. They moved him to a safe location and he received medical assistance from Canton Township firefighters and paramedics. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounce dead.
Police said the suspect barricaded himself inside his home after the shooting. Officers were able to convince the man to surrender. The suspect is in custody.
Police have not released the identity of the victim and are still working to notify his family.
“This was a senseless act of violence toward the victim,” Canton police chief Chad Baugh said. “The Canton Police Department sends our deepest condolences to the victim’s family, and to the neighbors who may have witnessed this tragic event.”
The case will be turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office to determine the charges.
