It happened at the Kamper Stevens Apartments on Washington Boulevard. It was an electrical fire in the 10th-floor stairwell and was not connected to prior issues.
An 86-year-old woman died.
More than 100 people call the building home. One resident on the 14th floor said she heard a loud boom and smoke started filling the building. She stayed put in her apartment until Detroit fire crews led her out to safety.
The body of her 86-year-old neighbor was found in a stairwell.
The Detroit Fire Department released the following statement:
“It was during that search our personnel discovered an unresponsive female in the 14th-floor stairwell who appeared to have experienced a medical emergency during her attempted evacuation. Unfortunately, our attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. Our hearts go out to her loved ones.”

David Bell, with Detroit Buildings, Safety Engineering, and Environmental Department, said the building had its inspection on July 25 and that there were no significant issues found.
Building management said they were “devastated” to hear about the death and that they are working with authorities in the investigation.
