EPA to begin cleanup next week at Clinton Township explosion site

Large industrial plant in Clinton Township was engulfed in flames

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will begin cleaning up the site of an explosion in Clinton Township.

The massive fire happened on March 4 at Goo Smoke Shop/Select Distributor on 15 Mile Road and Groesbeck Highway.

The fire caused containers of combustible gas to continuously explode.

According to officials, the debris field stretched at least a half-mile in every direction.

The EPA and Clinton Township Supervisor Bob Cannon confirmed that the clean-up of the potentially hazardous materials will begin next week.

“Driving by here is kind of depressing because it looks so different, and we had such a tragedy with the young man dying,” Cannon said.

The site has sat untouched for months as investigators from insurance companies and other entities have inspected the site.

“Somebody has got to be held responsible for this,” Cannon said.

The business owner, Noor Kestou, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and is due in court Tuesday for a probable cause conference.
