Neighborhood Wellness Centers to offer free health screenings for Detroit residents

Launch is part of collaboration with the Detroit Health Department and MDHHS

DETROIT – Residents in the city of Detroit have a growing list of community-based options for health and wellness screenings.

This week, a Neighborhood Wellness Center group is opening at seven church sites across Detroit.

The launch of these centers is part of a collaboration with the Detroit Health Department and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

“We made ourselves available for COVID-19 testing in 2020,” said Rev. Charles Williams, II of the Historic King Solomon Baptist Church. “We made ourselves available for vaccines. But now, what’s most important is we are making ourselves available to stem the tide of health disparities. High blood pressure, diabetes, and access to quality health care.”

Williams II said churches, like the Historic King Solomon Baptist Church, are in the heart of communities. People trust them. So, there remains a duty to step up.

“Too many people are using the emergency room for just basic health care.” Williams, II said. “So, churches, Black churches in the city of Detroit, are opening our doors across the city of Detroit. We’re saying, let us not only be a part of your spiritual health. Let us be a part of helping you get access to physical health.”

The Neighborhood Wellness Centers are opening with the help of Community Health Worker services.

According to Denise Fair Razo, Detroit’s Chief Public Health Officer, they will offer free preventative health screenings for residents.

“We’re going beyond the walls of the health department,” said Fair Razo. “Going into the community and providing wellness checks to our residents.”

Razo said launching the Neighborhood Wellness Centers is a step toward equitable access to essential wellness services.

“We’re offering diabetes services, cholesterol screenings, and, of course, COVID-19 screenings right here in their local church,” Razo said.

In addition to the screenings, the Neighborhood Wellness Centers also provide various wrap-around services.
