Sheriff warns of phone call scam around St. Clair County

Caller claims to be staff from the sheriff’s office

Scam callers are targeting senior citizens in Lapeer County. (WDIV)

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. – Sheriff Mat King is warning the community of a scam that is making its way around St. Clair County.

A local, 810 number is contacting local residents claiming to be either “Deputy Mark Williams” or “Lt. McMillan.”

The sheriff’s office says the caller is stating the person has warrants and must make a payment via a Bitcoin kiosk, or they’ll be arrested. The caller does appear to use local names to make the call sound legitimate.

The sheriff’s office says it will never contact you to inform you of a warrant, or to demand payment.

If you receive any suspicious calls, do not send money. Instead, contact your local police department.
