What does ‘underconsumption core’ mean? Explaining TikTok’s divisive new trend

New trends seem to go viral as soon as one is phased out. The latest is called “underconsumption” and it completely contradicts a trend that went viral months back.

Influencers started going viral for their huge unboxing videos, opening stacks of packages full of clothes, makeup and the latest viral products.

Many viewers started giving backlash, saying the huge hauls were unrealistic and promoting bad environmental practices.

The “underconsumption core” trend showcases the old items people are still using. It normalizes not overspending and being more conscious about what they are buying.

However, people are divided. Some users saying it should be called “normal consumption core” because some of the behaviors shown on the app are a part of many people’s everyday lives, such as reusing items.

All in all, the key word in personal finance is “personal.” Financial planner, Douglas Boneparth, recommends finding what works for your personal lifestyle and that allows for you to be disciplined and consistent.
