Detroit Fire Department battles massive mulch fire at storage yard

Mulch fire has been burning for 12+ hours

DETROIT – The Detroit Fire Department is battling a mulch fire at a storage yard.

The fire started at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024, at a storage yard at 14300 Prairie Street on Detroit’s west side. The fire was still burning more than twelve hours later.

The fire is causing smoke to billow across Detroit and into Windsor. The smoke is affecting air quality across Detroit, with some areas falling into the moderate category.

Officials said the fire is in massive piles of much that are stacked around 20 feet high or higher and stretched out over 500 yards in total. Crews have been working to put out as much as they possibly can.
