DETROIT – Preparations are underway for a big parade and community rally on Detroit’s east side.

“We’re setting up and preparing for the greatest show on earth,” said Artina Hardman, Director of Mack Alive.

Volunteers and the team with Mack Alive are busy putting on the final touches for the community and resource center’s 34th Annual Parade and Rally, which will held on Saturday, Aug. 24.

“We do it because we know that it’s the right thing to do,” said Hardman. “We do it because it brings out so much joy.”

According to staff, the idea for the Mack Alive Parade and Rally came about decades ago.

The idea came about when its Founder, Artina Tinsley Talabi, stumbled upon a troubling article about the community.

“It said that Mack is dead,” Hardman said. “It said the only thing they could do for the people was to move them out. Alberta Tinsley Talabi became very offended and she began to even act more.”

Mack Alive has since been providing various programming and services for individuals and families in need. The group’s annual parade only highlights that work and its neighbors.

“It’s a wonderful thing because it’s community,” one volunteer said. “Everybody around here knows Mack Alive because it’s a staple.”

This year’s Mack Alive Parade theme is “One Love.” Organizers want everyone to know they count.

The parade and rally will include giveaways, free health screenings, haircuts, clothing, food, and fun for the entire family.

Hundreds of people are expected to line the streets as the parade begins at Mack Avenue and St. Jean at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24. The parade will end at Mack Avenue and East Grand BLVD with a rally.
