Madison Heights mother, stepfather charged in 9-year-old accidental shooting

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. – Two people in Madison Heights are facing safe storage violations after a 9-year-old boy reportedly shot himself with an unsecured gun.

Police said it happened just after 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at a home on Palmer Street, near Diesing Drive, just south of 12 Mile Road. According to authorities, the 9-year-old shot himself in the hand with an unsecured gun. He is expected to be OK.

Police said the stepfather -- 27-year-old Jacob Zachary Gean -- and the mother -- 25-year-old Jessie Gean -- were charged Sunday, Aug. 25, with firearms-safe storage violation-minor present and inflicted serious impairment of a body function upon self or another, a 10-year felony.

They were given a $50,000 bond.
