What we’ve learned about a voter registration scam that we’re getting several calls about

Hank Winchester investigates new scam

Over the weekend, we received several calls about a voter registration scam targeting people around Metro Detroit.

Those calls came into the Help Me Hank tip line at 313-634-WDIV. Tipsters are all sharing a common story: They received an unsolicited text message regarding the upcoming presidential election.

In most cases, the link that was texted led to another website where they were being asked to enter their Social Security number, along with other personal information. Even the messages that were sent to people in our area were apparently trying to register voters in other states. As we all know, Michigan is a key swing state, and every vote here is crucial.

In other cases, people were getting messages asking for information about their voting history.

There are many ways you can go about registering to vote and checking your status. The easiest way is to go online -- this link will take you to the Michigan Secretary of State page, where you can make sure you are all set to vote or register.

I will be working today to talk to those who received these messages and also get important information from our SOS.

See you later today, live on Local 4 News.
