Over the summer, TravelMag marked Detroit’s oldest neighborhood as a top up-and-coming one in the nation.

Corktown was in the spotlight with the re-opening of Michigan Central Station in June. Since then, it was ranked America’s 16 “most up-and-coming neighborhoods.”

TravelMag selected one neighborhood in each destination city to come up with the list of 16 up-and-coming places from a total of 25 on their list.

The publication looked at the number of “cool cocktail bars, fancy coffee houses, and trendy eateries that have popped up in the past few years.” They also noted “LGBTQ-friendly and vegan spots.”

We can agree, Corktown has a love for its historic character. Those red bricks on Michigan Ave. are in hot water after Michigan’s Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced a road project which puts the bricks in jeopardy.

The community launched a “Save the Bricks” campaign to make sure when the digging begins, the red bricks are not a thing of the past.

TravelMag cited The Mercury Burger and Bar, Bobcat Bonnie’s and Brooklyn Street Local as favorite spots in the city. Detroiters will know those are just some of the beloved eateries and businesses in Corktown.

If you haven’t noticed, the neighborhood is creating tons of buzz, and now we know why.
