Bill would require Michigan schools to teach water safety

Should Michigan schools be required to teach water safety courses?

Michigan Rep. Donni Steele is bringing attention to a Senate bill that was introduced earlier this year that does just that. Senate Bill 736, which was introduced by Sen. Roger Victory, would require public schools to teach water safety courses.

The bill does not require swimming lessons, but does require that schools teach students about how to be safe in and around the water. The lessons would be included as part of a health or physical education course.

The turbulent history behind Michigan’s iconic Zilwaukee Bridge

Some believe this Michigan bridge marks the start of Up North. Others just marvel at its vast span and view of the Saginaw River. We’re talking about, of course, the Zilwaukee Bridge.

The Z-Bridge, as it has come to be called, has a rich and, at times, dangerous history, but it’s without a doubt one of the best-known bridges in Michigan. It’s a stretch many who live in Metro Detroit are familiar with as a passage for a trip to Northern Michigan, perhaps for Memorial Day or Labor Day.

They’re rarely spotted, but flying squirrels do live in Michigan forests

You have to be really, really lucky to ever see one, but flying squirrels do live in Michigan.

These nocturnal creatures live in mature forests, parks, and other woodlands. They have large, black eyes, rounded ears, and a flattened tail. Their gliding membranes are bordered with dark gray to black fur that connects their wrists to their ankles.

$3.75M worth of cocaine seized at Blue Water Bridge

Customs and Border Protection officers seized $3.75 million worth of cocaine at the Blue Water Bridge early Wednesday morning (Aug. 28).

Just before 3:30 a.m., officers were inspecting vehicles entering into Canada when they selected Iqbal Singh Virk and Ranjit Singh Rowal for an inspection. The two Canadian residents were in a truck that was pulling a trailer.
