Police say the incident is stemming from a non-fatal shooting that took place earlier in the day.

“So we got a call just before 3 p.m. this afternoon in the 5000 block Whitfield that an individual had been shot three times,” said Detroit police Deputy Chief Arnold Williams. “The shooting had occurred because of some type of domestic issue that may have happened earlier with the victim’s mom and the person who fired the shots. After the victim was shot, the individual who shot him ran back into the house.”

Willilams says the shooter has past felonies as he has done some violent things in the past.

Initially officers said they had contact with the shooter but as of 9:30 p.m. they were trying to regain contact.

Officials said they were using many different types of munitions to bring him out such as gas canisters and they said they’ve also deployed diversionary devices.

The shooter is armed with many different weapons ranging from long guns and handguns which is why officials said they were trying to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.

“We ask that if anybody is in the area of Underwood (Avenue) and Joy Road to be patient with us because we have the area blocked off pretty much just for everyone’s safety,” Williams said. “And if he can hear this, we ask that he give himself up and surrender to us peacefully, but we’re going to continue to work this and try to bring a peaceful resolution to it.”

Williams said the victim has been transported to a Metro Detroit hospital and has been listed in serious condition.

“For those who do come into the area to, be patient,” Williams said. “If you live here, be patient with us because we’re going to ID you and make sure you can get to your home safely. We have a lot of resources out here. We have the fire department. We have the EMS. We have units from the metropolitan division. We have officers from the 10th Precinct. So again, we’re trying to make sure we bring this to a peaceful resolution.”
