Michigan – Elk hunting season is underway and Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources is encouraging everyone to be alert to illegal hunting activity, even if you weren’t selected in this summer’s elk license drawing.

The DNR said over 70,000 people put in licenses to hunt elk during the 2024 season while only a few hundred are given out.

Officials say it’s important to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity that includes using nighttime spotlights or hunting outside of a season.

Sgt. Mike Mshar of the DNR Law Enforcement Division says they rely on the public’s help in reporting tips or suspicions of illegal elk or moose activity.

Suspicious activity can be reported to the DNR or the “report all poaching“ hotline at 1-800-292-7800. Tipsters may be awarded $2,500 for providing information that leads to an arrest.
