DETROIT – Thousands of union workers hit the streets of Detroit for an annual Labor Day march.
Some UAW Local 7 members began arriving at their staging area as early as 4 a.m.
Spectators lined up alongside Michigan Avenue, including educator Lynn Doyle-Curl.
“(It’s about) Protections and basic rights,” said Doyle-Curl.
This year’s theme, “United in Solidarity, Defending Democracy.
“This year, I mean we have a presidential election coming up so I think it’s very critical that UAW come together show solidarity around the candidates they support,” said Eric Fleming, president of UAW Local 7.
People marched throughout the streets of Corktown before ending at the Michigan Central Station.
A who’s who rallied union workers to vote in November, including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
“It’s important to remember that we have 63 days of a very high-stakes election coming up, and we have an opportunity to elect champions of the working person like Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” said Whitmer.
