DETROIT – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will lift some restrictions when it comes to transporting flammable liquids and corrosive materials across the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit.

Beginning Oct. 29, MDOT will allow the transport of some fuels and materials for batteries.

The announcement comes after a 6-month long public input period with residents, business owners, and lawmakers.

Back in November, MDOT opened a public comment period after the Detroit International Bridge Co., owners of the Ambassador Bridge, asked Michigan transportation regulators to allow expanded transport of hazardous materials.

Flammable class 3 and corrosive class 8 materials are allowed over the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron. Those materials are slated to be allowed for passage on the Gordie Howe Bridge as well.

Class 8 corrosives include batteries, fertilizer, detergent and pharmaceuticals. Class 3 includes flammable liquids like paint, varnish and fuel.

Those hazardous materials will be allowed across the Ambassador Bridge, but it will be done safely.

MDOT says restricted materials will only be transported across the bridge during off-peak transit hours and all shipments of hazardous materials will be under the supervision of vehicle escorts. Those hours will be decided by Oct. 29.
