Family seeks answers after 14-year-old boy is shot, killed at Michigan State Fair

Teen’s mother also lost her 17-year-old son in drive-by shooting

The family of the 14-year-old boy shot near the Michigan State Fair over the weekend is pleading for justice.

“I know that somebody knows something, and we just want justice for Darean,” said Darean Davis’ aunt Vertoya Gilbert.

Davis was shot and killed Saturday (Aug. 31) outside the Michigan State Fair in Novi.

“From my understanding, there was an altercation between him and some other boys, and the boy went back to his car and grabbed a weapon, and that was the end of it,” said Davis’ mom, Verteya Gilbert.

Novi police continue to search for the shooter.

“There’s nothing that I can say that’s going to bring my baby back,” Verteya said. “I just want all this gun violence to end.”

Davis’ friend, who was also 14, was shot but is expected to survive.
