DETROIT – You probably have a few questions.

Questions like:

  • Who is Kayla?
  • Why is she picking the Detroit Lions to win Super Bowl 59?
  • Is she right?
  • Does her opinion matter?

The answers to those questions are: Me, because, maybe!, and definitely not.

Hi. I’m Kayla. I notoriously do not know anything about sports and have no interest in watching them. But in January I started . . . experiencing something I’d never experienced before . . . it was a completely new sensation, something I found extremely difficult to admit. I . . . liked football?

Okay, it’s probably not that I liked football. It was more specific than that. I liked the Detroit Lions. It was, honestly, amazing to watch them get so close to the Super Bowl. ONE WIN AWAY. I could taste victory. I was heartbroken when they lost.

Disclaimer: Please don’t come at me with the, “You’re not a real fan!” I know. I’ll be the first to admit it.

I haven’t been following the Detroit Lions since the beginning. If you asked me who the players are I’d just stare blankly at you. Do I have a jersey? No. Memorabilia? No. Do I, with all my heart, really, really want them to go to the Super Bowl and win? Yes.

And I really believe that they can do it this time.

I’m still reeling from the fact that the Detroit Lions have never won a Super Bowl. But this next one, this one will be different. They’re going to make it and they’re going to win.

Why? Because I really, really, want them to. Didn’t you know that all you need to win the Super Bowl is the belief and complete support of me, Kayla, a random person on the internet who has only been mildly following the Detroit Lions for less than a year?

That was obviously a joke. If that’s all it took, then they would have made it to the last Super Bowl and won. I am aware that it actually takes hard work, dedication, skill, (and don’t hate me, but just a little bit of luck), to become champions.

I asked my colleague Derick Hutchinson why the Detroit Lions have improved (so that I’d have an opinion from someone who is actually familiar with the topic). He said that the team has improved because the GM has drafted well, and because they have developed players and rewarded those players with contract extensions.

Whatever it is they’re doing, they’re doing something right!

Let’s Go Lions!

- Kayla
