Mother shot dead in attempt to de-escalate argument in Detroit double shooting

The shooting occurred due to an argument between known acquaintances

DETROIT – A mother was shot and killed while trying to de-escalate an argument between two known acquaintances, one of which is her son on Detroit’s east side.

The double shooting occurred on Wednesday (Sept. 4) at 8:10 p.m. in the 18000 block of Runyon Street.

“We had a shots fired alert at 8:10 p.m.,” said Detroit police Commander John Svec. “Officers arrived within two minutes where two victims were discovered and immediately began rendering aid before they both were conveyed to local hospitals where the adult is currently fatal, and the other one is in critical condition.”

Officials say the son and the shooter knew each other and got into an argument before the shooter pulled a gun.

The mother tried to intervene and de-escalate it, at which time the shooter opened fire and fatally wounded her while injuring the son.

“You got two people hanging out, and all of a sudden, they get into an argument, it escalates, and we got two people shot; it’s just ridiculous,” Svec said.

Officials say the shooter has not been arrested, and police are still trying to identify the shooter.

“This is an isolated incident, and it was just an argument that went too far,” Svec said.
