Parents to file suit in case of Huron Valley Schools substitute teacher charged with sexual conduct

Families claim district ignored warnings about accused teacher

Parents are planning to file a civil lawsuit in the case of a Huron Valley Schools substitute teacher charged with criminal sexual conduct.

Timothy Allen Daugherty, a 61-year-old resident of White Lake, has been charged with six counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct by Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald.

Daugherty was charged on Aug. 29 with a series of incidents alleged to have occurred in Highland Township, where he was contracted as a substitute teacher.

The ages of the students range between nine and 11 years old.

Ven Johnson held a virtual news conference Thursday (Sept. 5) with his clients, who are parents of the alleged victims.

Johnson said he is working with 11 families to file a civil lawsuit against the district and other individuals, accusing them of failing to protect the students.

“(The district) knew about the fact that this gentleman was involved in a criminal case where he was being charged with a similar thing years ago back in the 2016 timeframe, so the question is what was he even doing there,” Johnson said.

The 2016 charges against Daugherty were dismissed.

Huron Valley Schools said they suspended Daugherty as soon as the most recent allegations came to light in April 2024.

However, the parents of the alleged victims say the district did not take the matter seriously.

“At every turn, they kind of dismissed us or made us seem like it wasn’t important or that it was hardly factual,” one parent said. “They blamed us at every turn that they could. We do not feel like we got any support from the Huron Valley School District.”

Local 4 has chosen not to name the parents of the alleged victims to protect their children’s identity.

Huron Valley Schools declined an interview request but released a statement.

“Huron Valley Schools was made aware of information regarding allegations of misconduct involving a contracted substitute teacher named Tim Daughtery. After a thorough investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the prosecutor has moved forward with formal charges.

Please note the individual was immediately removed from the District upon learning of the Allegations. HVS takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and the District has cooperated fully with law enforcement as they conducted their investigation and will continue to do so.
