Mother charged after 3-year-old son shoots himself on Detroit’s east side

DETROIT – A 38-year-old woman has been charged with safe storage violations after a 3-year-old accidentally shot himself on Detroit’s east side.

It happened Friday, Sept. 6, at a home on St. Patrick Avenue, near Conner Street. The boy was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but he is expected to recover.

Police said the firearm was unsecured. The mother reportedly told police she had just returned home from work, placed the gun on the dresser and within minutes, the boy found it and shot himself.

Tiara Shardae Taylor was charged Sunday with a safe storage violation that led to an injury, a five-year felony. Her bond was set at $250,000.

Taylor’s probable cause conference will take place Sept. 17.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, giving away gun locks and educating the community about gun safety. For those who were unable to make it to Saturday’s event, gun locks are available for free from most law enforcement offices.
