Former Warren police officer sentenced for assaulting teen inmate in custody

Matthew Rodriguez pled guilty to assault in April

WARREN, Mich. – Former Warren police officer Matthew Rodriguez was sentenced to one year and a day for attacking a teen inmate last year.

The disturbing video of Rodriguez punching a teenager in the head while the teen was standing with his hands in his pockets was released to the public.

Rodriguez, who the Warren Police Department fired, just left federal court where he was given the sentencing.

The sentencing comes after a teen was being booked on suspicion of carjacking last June when Rodriguez became angry, punched him, slammed him to the floor, and punched him again, with no de-escalation.

Rodriguez pled guilty to assault this past April.

Local 4 was told that the feds are also investigating Rodriguez for other violent incidents during his time as a police officer.
