Man accused of attacking German tourist unprovoked in Downtown Detroit

DETROIT – A 30-year-old man is facing charges after he reportedly assaulted an 81-year-old German tourist outside Campus Martius Park.

The incident off Woodward Avenue on Friday, Sept. 7, just after 10 a.m. According to authorities, Lawrence Deonte Gilchrist reportedly approached the man -- who was visiting from Bremen, Germany -- and hit him unprovoked. The tourist fell to the ground and hit his head. He was hospitalized for a head injury.

Gilchrist was charged Tuesday, Sept. 10, with assault with intent to do great bodily harm and aggravated assault.
